Yasmin Kabir of YDC Dance

Yasmin Kabir

Founder and MD of YDC Dance

Yasmin Kabir has dedicated her life to dance.

Starting from when she was a toddler, when she was impersonating her favorite pop stars, until now, where she owns her own dance school the ‘YDC Dance School’.

In her earlier years Yasmin attended Performing arts schools and was invested fully into performing arts. She trained in dance, acting, and singing, including, classical opera.

Performing arts is a passion to Yasmin but she wavered when she stumbled across a local street dance group. She trained for the group for a short while before being asked to be a trainee dance teacher for the school, aged just 13 years old. After passing the schools exams with 98,99% and 100% pass marks she became the second-in-charge at just 16 years old.

By 16 Yasmin had also entered multiple dance competitions earning her a multitude of trophies and awards, however, nothing gave her more joy than teaching. Although the buzz of being a competitive dancer was exciting, Yasmin felt the want and need to better peoples lives through dance.

Dance as a fund raiser.

It was at 16 that she started her own dance group and campaign in aid of the anti-knife crime charity, ‘The Ben Kinsella Trust’. As part of her dance group, ‘Yazzie’s Hip Hop Dance Class’, Yasmin was able to raise over £1,000 for the fund, as well as increase awareness for the anti-knife crime campaign. After three years of running the group, Yasmin was awarded the ‘Sandhurst Youth Award 2010’ for her effort with the campaign, and her ability to influence positive changes and progression for her dancers, the children of the local community. Meridian News also covered her story.

Dance Qualifications and further study.

Soon after, Yasmin gained her qualification in Performing arts. She achieved a triple distinction and moved on to attend The University of Surrey to study Dance and Culture.

The University enabled Yasmin to delve into the academics of dance and to push the boundaries of dance choreography. Whilst there she trained in Ballet, Contemporary, Kathak, Dancehall and African dance. Adding to her already extensive list of dance styles, including Jazz, Tap, Salsa and Bhangra. Even while studying Yasmin was not able to resist teaching! She found herself running the street dance course for a short while at the ‘Surrey Sports Park’ after a tutor put her forward for the job.

As part of her studies she also attended workshops with people such as Robert Hilton, and was part of the Hip Hop team led by Bly Richards and Matt Walker.

Yasmin majored her degree in African and Dancehall and was taught by H Pattern one of the leading African dance teachers. After gaining her degree Yasmin decided to take the steps to set up her own dance school which takes us up to the present day.

Yasmin runs YDC full time and involves herself with projects such as creatively directing music videos, choreographing wedding dances and doing private one-on-one classes for clients.

Connor McGee of YDC Dance

Connor McGee

From the age of 15, Connor took part in his first dance class at an after school club. He then fell in love with the art and wanted more training, and that’s where he joined a small local Street dance club.

He knew that this was what he was meant to do from being at the Street Dance Club for only a year, so he applied for college and enrolled onto the Level 3 Performing Arts Dance stream at MidKent College. With MidKent college Connor took on his first choreography role, and choreographed a Street dance set to compete in the colleges showcase competition, and after winning first place, he knew that this was his forte.
At college Connor not only choreographed again next year for the competition, he got asked to hold his own Street dance lessons at a local youth club and he also got to choreograph a Street dance set for a hip hop festival in Brest, France, in front of thousands of people! He studied at MidKent College for 2 years and afterwards applied for Creative Academy!

Creative Academy gave him all the skills he needed to not only be a great choreographer, but an amazing performer. From learning styles such as; Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Lyrcial, Street, Urban, Heels, Commercial, Bollywood, Contemporary, Contact, Release, Cunningham, etc. Creative Academy have Connor all the skills he needed to pursue his dream of being in the dance industry. Being at Creative Academy Connor took part in many modules and exams.

ISTD was one of Creative Academy’s selling points. Connor achieved a Distinction in Intermediate Foundation Ballet, and a Distinction in intermediate Modern Theatre Dance.

With Creative Academy Connor has performed at, Move it Exhibition 2018 in front of thousands of people, Keith and Paddy Picture Show ITV, Dance Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, Asian Bride Live at the London Excel, and many more!

He graduated from Creative Academy with a Upper a Second-Class Honours in Dance in June and wanted to find a local Street dance club, where he can teach, do workshops and train dancers to a high standard. And he found YDC in September and has loved teaching there since. He helped choreograph a routine in the Christmas show for YDC and is now a teaching for the competition teams.
